Temperature Readings

Right now the outdoor thermometer reads 12 degrees--and the night is still young. And right now, Adam is in our backyard setting up tents, the propane camping stove, and building a bonfire in a portable fire pit with eight of the Boy Scouts from the ward. (For various reasons they had to make a cancelation to the Klondike Derby and so our backyard is the substitute.)

And right now I'm reeeeaallly glad that I never had to be a Scout or ever endure any kind of winter camping. I am not a happy person when cold.

Suddenly the indoor house temp of 66 degrees feels perfectly warm (and practically balmy). I even took off my scarf.

You might want to lend your scarf to one of the scouts. 12 degrees and decreasing--ouch. That is not my kind of fun either.

You are a good sport about 66 degrees inside. That is a bit too chilly for comfort.

No way did you take the scarf off. You must still have the everlast on. It's about 19 here right now. Spencer is doing the Klondike in two weeks. I don't think it would be humanly possible for me to even get warm.

My ward does a survival-type thing with the Scouts where they take them out in the wilderness with an orange and some water (or something like that) and leave them alone to fend for themselves. I'm sure I have some of the details wrong (I do think the leaders watch them from not too far away, for example,) but it definitely sounds scary (although, thankfully, they don't do it in winter.) I can see the value of boys learning real skills, and at the same time I kinda hope they've discontinued it when Isaac's old enough.

I hope Adam and the boys had as cozy a night as could be expected. Actually it's one of those times when snow would be helpful (you don't have snow right now, right? Or do you?) I've heard snow caves and igloos can be very warm to sleep in.

Did they actually survive? What on earth is the point of that kind of camping. Frankly, I'm not sure scouting is such a great idea. That seems like nonesense.
And 12 degrees? ouch. I heard the high in Fargo yesterday was -10. What is the point of that?

How do you handle such a cold winter with little kids? One of my favorite things about living in a warm place is not having to pre-warm the car and bundle everyone up before going to church or the grocery store. Here's to hoping for a short winter.
