Adam just told me that Candyland is on sale at Toys R Us for just $2 (with rebate!) in case we want to replace the copy that I threw out a few months back. Thanks, but no thanks. It's still a big: PASS.
Next on the list for throwing away: the stinkin' set of plates, cups, and bowls sold at IKEA. Note to self (or any new parent): never, never, never, never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, ever buy anything that comes in multiple colors when you're planning to use them for more than one child. Because, no matter how many times we say (blithely, sternly, apathetically, etc..) "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit!" still, (and here's the important part), no one is happy unless their cup, plate and bowl at each meal are all
MATCHING!!!
Aaaaaarrrrrgh!! If my hair is starting to thin or if the bags under my eyes are looking larger and darker than normal, now you know why. So finally, after all of these years with the buckets and buckets of tears shed over having to eat from a yellow plate with a green cup and a pink spoon, we finally went out and bought three more sets--that's eighteen (EIGHTEEN!!) stupid plates and bowls and cups so that no one will EVER have to cry over this again. In fact, now both girls can eat from an all pink place setting--HOORAY! But, what happens? Irony has invited itself to pull up a chair at our dinner table because now Max is policing the nightly table setting (and then rearranging it) to ensure that no one will have a match. Cue hysterics from Isabel and Olivia.
Afterall, (he's insisting!) you get what you get and you don't throw a fit!

THAT WAS AWESOMELY HILARIOUS!!!!!
I just read it aloud to Richard. He bought us the cups 2 Christmases ago and has wanted to get the bowls and plates. Now, I'll think three times before we do.
And you bought 18! Haha. That's funny.
Oh! Max! Always ready to get a good rise out of this sisters! I am afraid that is Ethan's job also in our home.
OHHH MY GOODNESS. This post is really hitting home. At our house we fight about which stool we get to sit on at breakfast, who gets to set the plates and the cups, okay we fight about EVERYTHING that is trivial and insignificant. YIKES! I completely relate.
This reminds me of my house growing up. We had mismatched silverware and so at every meal my oldest brother got to proclaim which pattern was the "lucky" fork, or spoon, or knife and then the weeping, wailing, and attempts to steal from others would ensue. It was a sad day when my parents splurged on a large, new, matching set of silverware. Who wants everyone to be equal? Certainly not older brothers. Way to carry the torch Max!
THANK YOU FOR THE WARNING!
I just recently bough plates, just plates, from Ikea in green and yellow, and so far there are enough for Henry to always have green and Rose to always have yellow--oh, but guess what, it turns out that some of our old sippy cups happen to be green and yellow, and heaven help us if those cups are not clean and available to be matched with their coordinating plates, or I thoughtlessly offer the wrong cup.
Thankfully so far it's only Rose and Henry that have the plate color preferences. But I'm so glad to know what not to buy at Ikea (or anyway how much to buy if I do buy.)
It sounds like Max is the one who needed the devil horns for his costume . . .
Those Ikea cups cause so much pain. They look so pretty stacked up in the cupboard all cheery, in all the colors of the rainbow! But once they come out, they cause nothing but tears. Green is the culprit around here. I'm gonna push for Sean's favorite color to be blue. :)
P.S. Your Halloween pictures are great! Max sure was scary and the flapper costume was really cute. Glad to hear that Isabel is already a supporter of recycling, and as for Saul, he completely melted my heart this morning. What a cutie!!!
I remember arguing with my siblings when I was young about who got the BLUE Tupperware cup. And we have had our fair share of Ikea cup tears at our house. I can just see all the Moms revolting at IKEA and taking apart several "sets" so we can all have a set of the same color!
I'm convinced that saying is primarily used by older siblings to taunt their youngers anyway! As in, I'm bigger and faster so I got the one I want, but you should take the one that's left (so obviously inferior in some way) and not throw a fit!
Having these same problems in my house, Friday we bought all new RED melamine plates and bowls from Target. Red, that happy neutral color that everyone likes...so far.
I don't understand why you don't employ my rule about NO CHOOSING COLORS.
